Choosing Artwork that Matches the Interior Design of Your Home

Love art? Want to turn your home into a mini art gallery that rivals local NJ galleries? The trick lies in choosing the right artwork that elevates the aesthetics and living experience of your home,

In this article, we share a few tips that you can follow, to choose the perfect artwork that matches the interior design of each room in your house.

1.  Find your muse

All of us feel inspired by something or someone. Find out who/what your inspiration is. It could be anything from ancient Greece to Frida Kahlo. Narrowing down on your muse/inspiration can help you decide what types of artworks you’d like to have in your home. Your preferences can be based on types (paintings, sculptures etc.), colors, mediums and sizes.

Ask yourself these questions for each room you wish to decorate –

  • What feeling do I want people to experience when they spend time in this room?

  • What color theme do I want to create that is at once compelling and easy on the eyes?

  • Can I acquire the relevant furnishings and furniture to set-up this room in the same style?

  • How well does this theme flow into adjoining rooms?

2.  Decide what type of art/artist you want to support

Some art buyers and collectors swear by the renowned artists. They are happy to pay thousands, even millions of dollars to acquire a famous work of art for their personal collection.

But most of us can’t afford that – and we may even prefer the contemporary artwork of local NJ artists to grace our walls. You may even be someone who loves to get your hands on authentic indigenous artwork from around the world.

Once you’ve chosen your inspiration/muse, it helps to further drill down into the type of art you want for each room. Do you want your home to be an ode to fine art or a contemporary and cozy hangout space for you and your loved ones?

3.  Select the right size

Sizing is probably where most people go wrong when decorating their home’s interiors. Having the wrong size artwork in a particular room, can throw the entire aesthetics off.

The general rule is that your artwork should not exceed 75% of your wall size. This is true irrespective of whether it’s a stand-alone piece or a group of artworks or gallery wall. We recommend that you measure the dimensions of your largest wall. Multiply these dimensions by 0.57 and 0.70 each. This will give you the smallest and largest dimensions within which you’ll find the artwork of the right size.

Also, remember to account for the frame size as well, when selecting your artwork size. You may want to choose a smaller sized artwork if you are planning to get it framed.

4.  Check how much light your room receives

Unless they’re printed posters of artwork, every piece of art loses its pigments if exposed to direct sunlight. So, when positioning your artwork, you want to choose a wall that is the farthest away from any window. If you have many windows in the room, consider framing the artwork with UV acrylic plexiglass. This will stop it from fading in the light.

If space is a constraint or you don’t want to frame your work of art, there is a workaround. Both oil-on-canvas works and acrylic pieces are very resilient to sunlight. Consider changing mediums when selecting your artwork.
